American sportswear giant Nike has announced a significant workforce reduction, planning to lay off approximately 1,400 employees. This decision affects roughly two percent of its total global staff, with the cuts primarily impacting the company’s technology division as it implements sweeping operational changes.

Venkatesh Alagirisamy, Nike’s chief operating officer, stated that the layoffs aim to make the organization less complex and more agile. The company intends to simplify its overall operations while utilizing more advanced automation to build a more efficient and solid foundation for future growth in the competitive market.

This announcement follows an earlier restructuring move in January, when the Oregon-based firm eliminated 775 positions across its distribution centers. Currently employing about 78,000 people, Nike is navigating a period of financial adjustment as it attempts to streamline its global business structure and focus.

Regarding financial performance, the company reported a net profit of 520 million dollars for the fiscal quarter ending in February, marking a 35 percent decrease year-over-year. Sales remained stable at 11.279 billion dollars, yet the firm faces ongoing pressure to manage costs amid fluctuating global consumer demand.

Looking ahead, the multinational forecasts a revenue decline between two and four percent for the final quarter. While North American growth remains moderate, it is being largely offset by significant sales drops in China and the Converse brand, prompting the company to sharpen its strategic focus on profitability moving forward.
