Portugal: level crossing accident fatalities on the rise

As of December 31 of last year, Portugal had 763 level crossings, with over 60% featuring active protection secured by personnel or automatic signaling

Despite ongoing safety infrastructure improvements, authorities have raised serious concerns regarding a lack of progress in preventing track accidents.

A joint statement released this Tuesday highlighted that the total number of incidents remains disproportionate to the actual reduction of these physical intersections. The data suggests that simply closing physical crossings is not yielding the expected results.
