Grand Prix: How it all started

In 1954 the 1st edition was held with 15 enthusiasts racing on a dirt road and sand track. Since then a lot has changed. Get to know the story.

1954 – The year it all began. The idea came from three Macau residents with a passion for cars – Fernando Macedo Pinto, Carlos Silva and Paulo Antas – over coffee at the Riviera Hotel. Around 15 car enthusiasts raced on a dirt road and a sand track for 51 laps.

1956 – The central concrete grandstand was built, comprising 10 boxes and seating for 300 people.

1960 – For the first time, the Macau Grand Prix was included in the international calendar of motor racing events as a “national race with foreign participation”, and for the first time it was held in accordance with FIA regulations for sports and grand touring cars.

1966 – The fame of the Macau Grand Prix had already reached Europe and, for the first time, an “imported” driver, the Italian Mauro Bianchi, won the race.

1967 – The first edition of Motorcycles was held, which also coincided with the first fatal accident.

1978 – The 25th anniversary of the race was celebrated. Bob Harper, with the help of Teddy Yip, organized the Race of the Giants. A special race full of big names in motorsport.

1980 – The Grand Prix is named the first Formula Pacific Championship.

In 2003 the 50th Macau Grand Prix was held

2003 – The Jubilee Festival was the biggest celebration in the city’s history. The Grand Prix took place over two weekends, with an overwhelming turnout of competitors from all over the world.

2005 – The 52nd edition was a milestone in the event’s history as it included the final and decisive round of a world championship – the FIA World Touring Car Championship.

2020 – Marks the first year of races during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the restrictions, the Organizing Committee proceeded to hold the Grand Prix, and continued to do so in 2021 and 2022.

2023 – This year marks the 70th anniversary of the race and the return of F3, which could not be held during the pandemic.
