EU extends advisory for airlines to avoid Middle East airspace

European carriers are also being urged to closely supervise the evolving situation in the region and to continuously track all available aeronautical publications

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has officially extended its recommendation for all European airlines to avoid operating within the airspace of the Middle East until May 1. This measure, detailed in the latest Conflict Zone Information Bulletin (CZIB), encompasses the airspace over eleven nations, including Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and the Gulf states, as regional instability continues to pose potential risks to commercial aviation.

Under the current advisory, airlines are strictly cautioned against operating within the affected zones at any flight level or altitude. The agency aims to ensure the highest safety standards for passengers and crew by keeping commercial traffic away from areas where the security situation remains volatile, following ongoing tensions in the region that have necessitated these preventative measures for the aviation sector.

There are limited exceptions to this directive, as carriers may still operate at altitudes above 32,000 feet within specified segments of the airspace over Saudi Arabia and Oman. However, for these authorized flight paths, EASA requires airlines to implement a robust monitoring process and maintain an updated risk assessment to ensure that operations remain safe despite the broader regional instability.

European carriers are also being urged to closely supervise the evolving situation in the region and to continuously track all available aeronautical publications. Furthermore, EASA underscored that separate, long-standing recommendations remain in full effect, advising operators to avoid all flight levels and altitudes over Syrian and Yemeni airspace due to the persistent security threats present in those territories.
