Authorities are accused of negligence for an incident that killed hundreds and injured more than 6,000
Lebanese officials warned the prime minister and the country’s president in July about the risk of explosion of the 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored in the port of Beirut, according to documents to which Reuters had access and information from senior officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Just over two weeks after the alert, industrial chemicals caused a mega-explosion that destroyed most of the port, killed at least 220 people, injured more than 6,000 and destroyed about 6,000 buildings, according to city officials.
