A major celestial event unfolds across northern regions and Western Europe as a rare total solar eclipse crosses the Atlantic before reaching its climax over the Iberian Peninsula at sunset, says a report from CNN.
The event begins in remote northern Russia during local midday hours before sweeping across Greenland and Iceland, where observers will experience the longest duration of complete darkness at roughly two minutes and fifteen seconds.
The path of totality then reaches mainland Europe, passing through northern Spain and the northeastern edge of Portugal. In these regions, complete solar coverage will last under two minutes, offering a rare spectacle as the sun disappears just above the horizon.
For observers located outside the path of totality, a partial solar eclipse will be visible across North America, Europe, and northwestern Africa. Skywatchers in the northern United States will see a slight notch taken out of the sun, while observers in the United Kingdom will experience up to 95 percent partial coverage in the evening hours.

During the initial phase, the moon gradually covers the solar disk over a 70 to 80-minute window. As totality approaches, viewers within the main path can observe Baily’s beads—bright spots of sunlight shining through lunar valleys—followed by the single glowing light of the diamond ring effect.
Once the sun is fully covered, the solar corona becomes visible as faint white streamers extending into a darkened sky, alongside the pink rim of the chromosphere and bright surrounding stars. Following totality, the phenomenon reverses, ending as a crescent sun dips below the horizon.
Astronomers stress that certified solar protection must be worn throughout the entire event, except during the brief period of complete totality. To capture the memory, experts suggest filming the reactions of loved ones rather than focusing solely on photographing the sun. The astronomical excitement continues into the night as the annual Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak through the early morning hours.
