Population buys pro-democracy newspaper as a sign of support

Hong Kong residents lined up today to buy the Apple Daily, in support of the pro-democracy newspaper, after the owner was arrested on Monday under national security law.

A sign of the generation of appearance in the former British colony, many inhabitants rushed to the newsstands to buy the Apple Daily, which anticipated demand, printing 550,000 copies exceptionally, against 70,000 in normal circumstances.

The owner of a restaurant in the popular Mongkok district bought about 50 copies, explaining that he intended to distribute them free of charge to customers.

“Since the Government does not want the Apple Diary to survive, we must be the people of Hong Kong to save it,” he told the France-Presse news agency (AFP).
