U.S. President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva concluded a marathon three-hour summit at the White House on Thursday, signaling a surprising thaw in relations between the two largest economies in the Americas.
Following a year defined by sharp diplomatic friction and aggressive trade tariffs, both leaders utilized social media to project an image of mutual respect and cooperation.
Writing on his platform, Truth Social, President Trump lauded his Brazilian counterpart, describing him as “the very dynamic President of Brazil.” Trump confirmed that the discussions delved into critical bilateral issues, with a specific focus on the ongoing trade and tariff disputes that have strained the partnership since Trump’s return to office in 2025.
“The meeting was very good,” Trump noted, adding that representatives from both nations have already scheduled follow-up sessions to address “key points” in the coming months.

The Brazilian delegation arrived in Washington on Wednesday evening with a heavy-hitting cabinet, including the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Energy, and Industry. The presence of Justice Minister Wellington César Lima e Silva and Federal Police Chief Andrei Rodrigues underscored the meeting’s broader agenda, which reportedly included security cooperation alongside economic interests.
The summit’s positive tone follows a 40-minute “friendly” phone call last Friday, during which Trump reportedly told Lula “I love you,” a moment that was widely leaked to the Brazilian press and seen as a strategic pivot toward personal diplomacy.

Photos released by both administrations showed the leaders smiling and shaking hands in the Oval Office, a stark contrast to the “tense encounter” many analysts had predicted.
The Brazilian government characterized the three-hour dialogue as one built on “respect and friendship,” highlighting a partnership that spans over 200 years.
While specific breakthroughs on tariff rollbacks have yet to be announced, the establishment of a formal meeting schedule suggests a move toward a structured resolution. Lula is expected to hold a press conference at the Brazilian Embassy later today before departing for Brasília.
