Since July 17, Macau has now offered an expanded range of tourist transportation options. The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has launched four new routes as part of the “Tourism and Leisure Bus” program: “Exploring the Charm of the Neighborhoods,” an initiative aimed at directing the flow of visitors from major attractions to outlying communities.
The launch of the operation went off without a hitch, according to information provided by the relevant authority. The MGTO dispatched inspection teams to the departure stops to monitor the first day of service and evaluate the performance of the companies responsible for managing the vehicles and the crews stationed at the terminals.
Enforcement and operational guidelines
As part of the monitoring effort, the MGTO issued clear guidelines to all service providers. Strict adherence to the established schedules and routes was required, as well as the active presence of teams at boarding points to assist passengers.
The goal is for tourists to obtain accurate information about available destinations, encouraging them to venture off the beaten path and discover new points of interest. The initiative aims to transform each trip into a gateway to the reality of local neighborhoods, promoting photography, leisure, and, above all, local consumption.

Coverage extended through 2027
The new routes are guaranteed through January 3, 2027, covering periods of peak tourist demand, such as summer vacation, the National Day holiday, the Christmas season, and New Year’s Eve. The choice of dates reflects the intention to maximize the measure’s impact during times of peak visitor traffic to the city.
The routes start at two of Macau’s most iconic destinations—Rua do Cunha and the Ruins of St. Paul’s—and extend to eight neighborhood areas: Barra, Anim’Arte Nam Van, NAPE, ZAPE, Carlos da Maia Roundabout, Iao Hon, Patane Municipal Market, and Fai Chi Kei.
Four itineraries for exploring the city
The structure of the routes was designed to offer a variety of experiences:
-
- Route 1 connects Rua do Cunha to NAPE and ZAPE.
- Route 2 runs from Rua do Cunha to Barra and Anim’Arte Nam Van.
- Route 3 departs from the Ruins of São Paulo and heads toward the Patane Municipal Market and Fai Chi Kei; it is the only route with a direct connection to the latter area.
- Route 4 also departs from the Ruins, but continues to the Carlos da Maia Roundabout and the Iao Hon neighborhood.

Operations tailored to demand
The schedule is based on visitor patterns. During July and August, the service is extended to Fridays to accommodate the natural increase in demand during summer vacation. During the remaining months, the service operates only on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
The scheduled frequency is one bus per hour, for a total of six trips per day, between 11:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. This schedule was designed to offer flexibility to tourists who want to explore the neighborhoods without sacrificing the rest of their day.
Audio guide as an added value
To enhance the onboard experience, MGTO has announced the gradual rollout of an audio guide system. This tool, which will be available on both existing and new routes, is designed to highlight the characteristics and attractions of each neighborhood along the route.

This way, passengers arrive at their destination already knowing what to expect, turning the journey into an informative and immersive experience.
Revitalize the local economy
The Macao Special Administrative Region Government’s initiative goes beyond mobility. The creation of these routes aims to build a structural bridge between major tourist hubs and local neighborhoods, encouraging visitors to experience the authenticity of each area.
By encouraging visitors to explore the neighborhoods, the routes also aim to boost spending and generate revenue for local businesses, in an initiative that combines tourism, culture, and economic development. The idea is for visitors to experience the vitality of these communities and include them in their itinerary as they tour the city.
