Torreense made history on Sunday by becoming the very first team playing outside the top flight to win the Taça de Portugal. They defeated the trophy holders, Sporting CP, 2–1 after extra time in a dramatic final at the Estádio Nacional in Oeiras.
A penalty converted by Stopira in the 113th minute—following a foul that led to a red card for Sporting’s Maxi Araújo—secured the historic victory for Luís Tralhão’s side. The match had ended 1–1 in regular time, with Kevin Zohi scoring for the underdogs in just the fourth minute, and Luis Suárez equalizing for the “Lions” in the 54th minute.
Currently fighting for promotion to the Primeira Liga, the Torres Vedras-based club was making its second appearance ever in a Taça de Portugal final, exactly 70 years after losing 2–0 to FC Porto in the 1955/56 edition.
