The President of the Republic, António José Seguro, delivered a national flag to the Portuguese football team today, so that they can use it after the World Cup 2026 final, while expressing his strong hope that the team will emerge victorious as world champions.
“The country believes in you. Make us dream and bring home the trophy that we are missing. We will all be cheering for you. I believe that, with your enthusiasm, strength, grit, talent, and hard work, this is entirely possible,” the leader stated.
“Today, I symbolically hand over the national flag so that you can all carry it on July 19. It will be the sign that we succeeded, that the dream became reality, and that you are once again champions, but this time, world champions,” said the Portuguese President.
This was the inspiring motto as António José Seguro visited the delegation that will compete in the World Cup, a tripartite organization between the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico, which kicks off this Thursday and concludes on July 19.

“Play for each other, work for each other, and play and work in memory of our Diogo Jota as well. I want you to know that, more important than anything else, is the joy and pride of wearing the national team jersey,” he urged.
The President of the Republic reminded everyone that all Portuguese living in the country, those scattered across the world, and many who, despite not being Portuguese, identify with the team’s spirit and enthusiasm, will be cheering them on during the tournament.
“In a tournament of this magnitude, one goes through many difficulties and demanding moments, but that is exactly where the grit and soul of being Portuguese are shown. At that time, millions of people worldwide will support you,” the Head of State noted.
Elected in March of this year, the Head of State received the team’s official jersey from captain Cristiano Ronaldo, personalized with his name, as well as a bust featuring the same jersey, presented by the Portuguese Football Federation president, Pedro Proença.

“The national team departs soon for a highly demanding challenge, but it does so with the confidence of knowing it carries the support of the entire country. Your Excellency’s example, dedication, and spirit of public service inspire our selection,” Proença highlighted.
Portugal travels this Friday to Palm Beach in Miami, Florida, where it will set up its training camp. The team begins the tournament in Group K, with its debut scheduled for June 17 against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Houston.
The opening match is scheduled for 12:00 local time (18:00 Lisbon time). Next up is debutant Uzbekistan on June 23, also in Houston at 12:00, before closing the group stage on June 27 against Colombia in Miami at 19:30.
