Eileen Wang, the mayor of the California city of Arcadia, resigned from office this Monday following federal charges alleging she acted as an unregistered agent for the Chinese government. According to the Department of Justice, the 58-year-old official is expected to plead guilty to charges involving the dissemination of state-sponsored propaganda through a front news organization between late 2020 and 2022.
The federal investigation centered on a website titled “U.S. News Center,” which presented itself as a legitimate media outlet for the Chinese American community. However, prosecutors allege the site was actually managed by Wang and her co-conspirator,
Yaoning “Mike” Sun, under the direct influence of officials from the People’s Republic of China. The pair allegedly used the platform to publish articles favorable to Beijing, including a specific instance in June 2021 where they rapidly posted an essay denying forced labor in Xinjiang just minutes after receiving a draft via an encrypted messaging app.
The Department of Justice highlighted the serious nature of the breach of public trust, noting that Wang failed to disclose her foreign affiliations before being elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022.

Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg expressed deep concern over the lack of transparency, emphasizing that Wang was executing directives from a foreign power while holding a local American office. Other documented incidents include the publication of content dictated directly by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a statement released through her attorney, Wang apologized for her actions, attributing the lapse in judgment to personal issues and misplaced trust in an unnamed individual. Despite her resignation and public apology, the legal consequences remain severe.
While her co-conspirator is already serving a four-year sentence, Wang faces a statutory maximum of 10 years in federal prison. Her initial court appearance took place in downtown Los Angeles, with a formal guilty plea expected in the coming weeks.
