The new Portuguese nationality law will be treated as a “delicate issue” and a matter of “interest” by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during his meetings in Portugal with his Portuguese counterpart António José Seguro and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, according to Brazil’s Foreign Ministry.
The statement was made today by Brazil’s Secretary for Europe and North America, Ambassador Roberto Abdalla, during a press conference in Brasília when asked about the agenda of Lula da Silva’s upcoming visit to Portugal on April 21.

The Portuguese Parliament approved on April 1 a revised nationality law and amendments to the Penal Code, following earlier versions being partially struck down by the Constitutional Court.
The Socialist Party (PS) said it is still assessing whether to request constitutional review of the criminal law changes, which introduce the possibility of loss of nationality as an accessory penalty. The final decision would be independent of any action taken by the President, António José Seguro, who is responsible for promulgating the law.
