German side Bayer Leverkusen drew 1-1 today at home against English side Arsenal, winners of the league phase, in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.
The Germans took the lead at the start of the second half, on 46 minutes, with a goal from captain Robert Andrich, but the English side equalised late on, in the 89th minute, through a penalty from substitute Kai Havertz — who scored against the club where he completed his youth development and made his senior debut.
Sole leaders of the Premier League, Arsenal had won all eight of their league phase matches and failed to win for the first time in their ninth outing of the current edition, having qualified directly for the round of 16 — unlike Bayer Leverkusen, who came through the play-off.
