A new factual drama centered on the intense interrogation of Kate McCann by the Portuguese Judiciary Police (PJ) is set to air on British television next week. Titled Under Suspicion: Kate McCann, the 90-minute film focuses on a pivotal moment in the investigation into the 2007 disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann in Praia da Luz, Algarve.

The narrative takes place three months after the child vanished, at the point when Portuguese authorities shifted their focus toward the parents. Based on official interrogation records, the film details the accusatory tone used by investigators as they confronted Kate with what was then described as incriminating forensic evidence.

According to the production notes, the film explores the immense international media pressure and public scrutiny that faced the PJ due to a lack of concrete leads or arrests.

The film portrays the grueling hours Kate spent in the interrogation room, highlighting her internal struggle between the desire to cooperate fully and the need to protect her legal standing once she was named an arguida (official suspect). The production suggests that the formal accusations raised fears that the search for Madeleine would be abandoned in favor of building a case against the parents.

The “factual drama” concludes with the final interrogation session where, acting on the advice of her legal team, Kate chose to answer the majority of questions with “no comment.”

Airing this Wednesday on Channel 5, the film features:

  • Laura Bayston: Starring as Kate McCann.

  • Portuguese Cast: Including Joana Borja, Hugo Nicolau, Miguel Freire, and Carlos Agualusa.

  • Screenwriter: Philip Ralph, who emphasized the challenge of turning police notes into accurate dialogue.

Screenwriter Philip Ralph noted that his primary goal was to strip away the “noise” and “hyperbole” that has surrounded the case for nearly two decades. While Ralph expressed surprise at the “unbelievable” nature of the accusations made by the PJ at the time—which he claims were based on “highly questionable evidence”—the film aims to provide a precise look at the specific interaction between Kate and the officers.

By focusing strictly on the mechanics of the interviews, Ralph believes the film serves as a necessary antidote to the conspiracy theories that have haunted the story since 2007. The disappearance remains one of the most high-profile and controversial missing person cases in modern history.
