Five days after eliminating Benfica in the Champions League playoff for a place in the round of 16, the Merengues suffered their fourth defeat of the domestic season — and second consecutive — courtesy of a first-half goal from Uruguayan striker Martín Satriano in the 39th minute.
Both teams finished the match with ten men, following stoppage-time red cards for Argentine Franco Mastantuono (90+5) on the home side, and Adrián Liso (90+7) for the visitors.
Real Madrid remain in second place with 60 points, four behind FC Barcelona, whose lead was reinforced on Saturday with a convincing home win over Villarreal (4-1). Villarreal sit fourth with 51 points, level with Atlético de Madrid in third.
Getafe returned to winning ways — fielding Portuguese defender Domingos Duarte for the full 90 minutes — and climbed to 11th place with 32 points, eight clear of the relegation zone.
The Madrid suburban club had not beaten Real in over four years, and had only previously won at the Bernabéu in 2007/08.
