A dominant Aston Villa dispatched Freiburg with a commanding performance in Istanbul, capturing the Europa League trophy and spectacularly ending a 30-year wait for major silverware.
First-half stunners from Youri Tielemans and Emi Buendia gave Villa complete control of the match before a second-half strike from Morgan Rogers sealed the club’s second major European title, exactly 44 years after their legendary 1982 European Cup triumph.
To witness the historic occasion, nine members of that iconic 1982 squad traveled to Besiktas Park to watch manager Unai Emery secure his fifth Europa League crown. The victory marks an unbelievable transformation for the club since Emery took the reins from Steven Gerrard in November 2022.
Arriving with Villa sitting just three points above the Premier League relegation zone, the Spanish tactician has rapidly molded the team into top-five contenders and now, European champions. Up in the stands, lifelong Villa supporter Prince William was seen celebrating enthusiastically at the final whistle as the club hoisted its first major piece of silverware since the 1996 League Cup.

The match began with early tension as Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu did well to keep out an initial drive from Morgan Rogers. At the other end, Nicolas Hofler, playing in the final match of his career before retirement, fired an effort just wide of the post. After those opening exchanges, however, Villa completely took over the pitch.
The breakthrough came four minutes before the interval. Executing a clever short corner routine, Tielemans—the man who previously scored Leicester’s famous winner in the 2021 FA Cup final—brilliantly met a floated delivery to thunder home a controlled volley.
Villa struck again in first-half stoppage time when Buendia produced a moment of magic. The Argentine playmaker picked up the ball 18 yards out, turned sharply, and curled an exquisite finish beyond the reaching arms of Atubolu to leave the Bundesliga side with a mountain to climb.
Any hopes of a Freiburg comeback were permanently dashed just before the hour mark. Underlining Villa’s total superiority, Buendia turned provider by driving a low, dangerous cross toward the near post, allowing Rogers to react quickest and poke the ball home for Villa’s third.
The English side could have easily expanded their lead further, as Amadou Onana rattled the post with a header and Buendia missed a golden opportunity to claim a personal second, but the historic victory was already safely secured.
