Macau expects to have more than 3,000 births in 2026 again

Macau hopes to return to having more than 3,000 births per year. The goal was advanced by the director of the Conde de São Januário Hospital, Tai Wa Hou, after 2025 registered the lowest number of babies in the last five decades.

In 2025, 2,871 babies were born, 735 less than in the previous year. But for 2026, health authorities appear more optimistic. In statements to TDM, Tai Wa Hou, director of the Hospital Conde de São Januário, expects that the number of births will rise above the 3,000 mark again, thanks to new incentives for mothers.

Among these measures, he highlighted the free non-invasive prenatal test for all pregnant residents and the launch of a digital platform for monitoring the health of pregnant women throughout the entire pregnancy period.
