Youth unemployment hits new record high in China in June

Lusa

The official unemployment rate among China’s urban youth (aged 16 to 24) reached a new all-time high in June, rising to 21.3%, according to data published today by the National Bureau of Statistics (GNE).

The proportion of unemployed young people thus rises from the value of 20.8%, recorded in May, setting a new maximum since the sub-index began to be counted, in 2018.

In June, the unemployment rate for the overall working population was 5.2%, unchanged from May.

GNE added that the urban unemployment rate in the first half of the year was 5.3% and that Beijing has set a target of creating around 12 million new jobs in cities by 2023.

China has more than 96 million young people between the ages of 16 and 24, among whom more than 33 million entered the labor market this year.
