Guitarist Mark Sheehan, 46, of Irish rock band The Script has died

Guitarist Mark Sheehan, 46, of Irish rock band The Script died on Friday in hospital after a brief illness, the band announced in a statement, quoted by the Associated Press (AP) news agency.

In the statement, the band refers to Sheehan as “husband, father, brother, bandmate and much-loved friend.”

The President of the Republic of Ireland honored the memory of Mark Sheehan. Michael D. Higgins praised the band’s “originality and excellence” and sent condolences to Sheehan’s family.

“Through their music, Mark and The Script have played an important role in continuing and promoting this proud tradition of successful Irish music around the world,” said Higgins.

Formed in Dublin in 2001 by Sheehan, singer Danny O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power, The Script topped the UK and Irish charts with their eponymous debut album in 2008, which includes the hits “We Cry ”, “Breakeven” and “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved”, which reached number one in five countries.

The band’s pop-influenced rock sound made them one of Ireland’s biggest bands of the 2010s, reports the AP.

The Script have had six Top 10 albums in the UK and one top three album in the US.

Sheehan was married to Rina Sheehan, with whom he had three children.
