Lula defends G20 and wants more countries in global governance

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended, at a press conference in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, the strengthening of global governance that expands the representation of countries in spaces for international dialogue. “I don’t want to create a movement separate from the G7. The G7 does not depend on Brazil for its existence,” he declared.

For the Brazilian, a broader bloc of countries, like the G20, should be responsible for discussing topics on the agenda, such as peace among nations; environment; economic issues, such as inflation and interest rates; violence; hate speech on digital networks; and strengthening democracy.

“When we created the G20, it was because the G7 had understood that it no longer had the necessary size to discuss the 2008 crisis”, he pointed out. Lula also said that Brazil wants to be a protagonist in global issues. “I respect all countries, all the meetings that each one wants to hold, I respect the self-determination of peoples, but what I want to say is that Brazil has its own thinking and wants to return to being a protagonist of great influence, above all, in this issue of climate. Few nations have the political and moral authority to discuss this,” he pointed out.

Lula, who returned this Sunday (16) to Brazil, pointed out that the trip to China represented agreements totaling R$ 50 billion. In the United Arab Emirates, investments in the order of BRL 12.5 billion were negotiated through a memorandum of understanding between the state of Bahia and the Abu Dhabi financial fund Mubadala Capital, controller of the Mataripe refinery, privatized in 2021.

“In May, we are going to discuss with Brazilian governors the main works in the country. And we want to present these works to other countries so that businessmen who want to invest in Brazil have the right investment option. Brazil is a country that has legal stability, political stability and will become a country of economic stability. We are a government that has credibility in society and with other countries in the world. We guarantee social stability in the country and we are a very predictable government”, he declared.

Negotiation for peace

The president once again defended the negotiation of peace between Russia and Ukraine with the meeting of neutral countries. “The war decision was taken by two countries. And now what we’re trying to build is a group of countries that are not involved in war, that don’t want war, that want to build peace in the world, to talk to both Russia and Ukraine. But we also have to take into account that it is necessary to talk with the United States and the European Union, ”he said. Lula also said that he intends to involve Latin American countries.

Extradition

When questioned, the president confirmed the extradition of Thiago Brennand, a Brazilian businessman who is accused of assaulting women, in addition to possessing illegal weapons. Lula stated that the issue was not officially discussed with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates.

“I heard that the United Arab Emirates are going to carry out the extradition. When it will happen is a question of Justice. The only thing I know is that if there are a million citizens like this in the world, they all deserve to be punished. It is not acceptable for such a brute to be an aggressor of women. I think he has to pay ”, he defended.
