Hotel occupancy up in January

In January, the hotel occupancy rate rose 27.3 percentage points year-on-year. According to the Statistics and Census Service, last month the average occupancy rate was 71.2%.

In January, hotel establishments hosted 819,000 people, up 59.6% year-on-year. Of particular note was the increase in guests from Hong Kong, which with 105,000 showed an increase of 484.4%.

In the month marking the Chinese New Year festive period, the number of visitors taking part in local tours was 4,800, up 80.4% compared to January 2022.

In January 2023, there were 125 hotel establishments providing accommodation services to the public (up 7 compared with the same month in 2022), providing a total of 38,000 guest rooms, down 1.8% due to the reduction in guest room availability of 5-star hotels.

The turnover figures of retail outlets during the past year were also presented. There was a drop of 22.1% year-on-year, after a figure of MOP57.71 billion was recorded.
