Ukrainian conductor directs works by Russian composers. Guimarães Allegro seeks to call attention to the culture of cancellation and the threat “to the values and freedoms that we take for granted.

The seventh edition of the classical music festival takes place between July 14 and 16. The opening concert will consist of works by Russian composers and will be conducted by a Ukrainian conductor.

The Guimarães Orchestra will open the festival, on the 14th, at 10 pm, at Paço dos Duques de Bragança. At the baton will be the Ukrainian conductor Maxim Rysanov. Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet”, based on William Shakespeare’s work of the same name, and Mussorgsky’s “Pictures of an Exhibition” will be performed. The organization recalls the “troubled times” we are going through and stresses that this is “a true demonstration of the universal power of music.

The 12 concerts of Guimarães Allegro will be spread, as usual, over several monuments, streets and gardens of the cradle city. On Friday, the young soloists from the city’s conservatory will show their talent at the Paço dos Duques, at 7 pm. Also on this second day, the Guimarães String Quartet will perform with soprano Wioletta Hebrowska-Klein, in the renovated outdoor space of the Teatro Jordão, at 10 pm, in a program entirely composed of opera arias.
