Venice Biennale recalls the times of fascism

In the 2020 edition, the year of widespread cancellation, an event chooses the dark past to show. In 1895 the Venice Biennale was launched, which would become one of the most relevant cultural events in the world

Right at the entrance, a poster shows, in a soft tone design, the winding bow typical of the Venetian gondola surrounded by roses, the sea and the schedule of the first international art exhibition in Venice – a party with serenades, concerts, theater shows, competitions sports and fireworks displays. The year was 1895, and thus the cultural event that would become one of the most relevant in the world premiered.

But just take five steps inside the exhibition “Le Muse Inquiete – La Biennale di Venezia di fore alla storia” (the restless muses – the Venice Biennale in the face of history) to see that frugality would be restricted to the first 125 years of the institution, which, in addition to visual arts, today brings together the directions of cinema, theater, architecture, music and dance.
