NBA: Lakers stumble again as Rockets force Game 6 (with video)

LeBron James, looking to bounce back from a career-worst shooting performance in Game 4, shouldered the load with 25 points and seven assists

The Los Angeles Lakers once again failed to close out their Western Conference playoff series, falling 99-93 to a resilient Houston Rockets squad on Wednesday night. Despite the return of a key starter and a late surge from LeBron James, the Rockets held firm at Crypto.com Arena to send the series back to Houston for a pivotal Game 6 this Friday.

Houston’s balanced attack was the story for much of the evening, with all five starters reaching double figures. Jabari Smith Jr. led the way with 22 points, including four critical conversions from beyond the arc.

The Rockets also benefited from the versatile play of Alperen Şengün, who nearly notched a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists, while Tari Eason contributed a gritty 18 points to keep the Lakers’ defense on its heels.

The night began with a spark of hope for Los Angeles as Austin Reaves made his 2026 postseason debut after a nearly month-long absence due to an oblique injury.

Coming off the bench as the first substitute, Reaves provided an immediate scoring punch, finishing with 22 points. However, the rust from his 27-day layoff was evident in his 4-of-16 shooting performance from the field, and his presence struggled to offset the Lakers’ persistent turnover issues.

LeBron James, looking to bounce back from a career-worst shooting performance in Game 4, shouldered the load with 25 points and seven assists.

His relentless play in the fourth quarter fueled an 11-1 run that brought the Lakers within three points at 88-85 with just under three minutes remaining.

But as the Los Angeles crowd reached a fever pitch, Houston’s second-year guard Reed Sheppard silenced the arena. After a brief stumble, Sheppard buried a clutch mid-range jumper before stripping James at midcourt on the following possession and racing away for a emphatic transition dunk.

The Lakers’ supporting cast struggled to find a rhythm as the Rockets’ defensive pressure intensified. Marcus Smart committed six of the team’s 15 turnovers, and Luke Kennard, who had been a reliable offensive weapon earlier in the series, went scoreless from the field in 31 minutes of action. James himself struggled from deep, missing all six of his three-point attempts, including two desperate heaves in the closing seconds.

With this victory, Ime Udoka’s young Rockets have transformed the momentum of a series that once looked like a sweep. While no team in NBA history has ever successfully overturned a 3-0 deficit, Houston is now just one home win away from forcing a winner-take-all Game 7.

The Lakers must now head back to the road to find a way to integrate a returning Reaves while rediscovering the composure that gave them their initial lead in the series.
