Hong Kong: Amnesty International skeptical about Portuguese Government action

The coordinator of the group on human rights in China of Amnesty International in Portugal, Teresa Nogueira, is convinced that Lisbon is not following the case of the young man with Portuguese and Chinese nationality who is part of the group of 12 Hong Kong residents, detained for a month by the Chinese authorities, when trying to escape by boat to Taiwan.

In an interview with TDM-Rádio Macau, Teresa Nogueira stated that, in other cases, in the past, hearings were requested at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and that the answer was “always the same”: “’We are acting, but discreetly so that things give results’. I, personally, am convinced that they do nothing because, in reality, what interests them is doing business with China ”.

The AI representative in Lisbon questions, moreover, what the consul general of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong wanted to say when she said she was following the situation: “He said he was following the case. But what is following the case? It is nothing – it says nothing. Therefore, we are increasingly skeptical about the performance of the Portuguese Government, which wants to have good relations with China, financial aid from China, etc. ”.
