Victor Wembanyama delivered a defensive masterpiece for the ages on Monday night, yet his historic individual performance could not prevent the San Antonio Spurs from dropping Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.
Despite Wembanyama setting a new NBA postseason record with 12 blocked shots, the Minnesota Timberwolves orchestrated a late surge at the Frost Bank Center to secure a gritty 104-102 victory. The win was particularly meaningful for Minnesota as it marked the return of Anthony Edwards, who provided a significant spark off the bench after missing over a week with a knee injury.
The reigning Defensive Player of the Year was an impenetrable wall for most of the evening, reaching double-digit blocks by the end of the third quarter alone.
Yahoo reported that “Wembanyama broke the NBA postseason single-game blocks record in the contest and was an incredible force inside,” ultimately surpassing a legendary mark previously shared by Andrew Bynum, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Mark Eaton. His record-breaking 11th block came early in the fourth quarter when he denied Edwards at the rim, a moment that seemed to shift the momentum in San Antonio’s favor momentarily.

However, Wembanyama’s offensive struggles proved costly as he finished with just 11 points on 5-of-17 shooting, including a difficult 0-of-8 mark from three-point range.
While the Spurs boasted a balanced attack with seven players in double figures—led by Dylan Harper’s 18 points—they could not weather a sudden 14-2 run by the Timberwolves following the record-setting block. Minnesota’s Mike Conley hit a crucial corner three during the stretch, and Julius Randle anchored the visitors with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
San Antonio had one final chance to steal the game in the closing seconds after a Minnesota miss, but Julian Champagnie’s look at a game-winner fell short.
The Timberwolves escaped with the narrow win and a 1-0 series lead despite Edwards being held to a minutes restriction. The Spurs will look to even the series on Wednesday night in San Antonio, hoping to pair Wembanyama’s unprecedented rim protection with a more efficient offensive outing.
