A group of nearly 200 Portuguese-speaking writers this Tuesday called for political commitments to be made to prevent an “escalation” of populism, violence and xenophobia, and called on democratic agents to counter these resurgent threats.
In an open letter sent to Lusa, signed by 187 Portuguese-speaking writers, ranging from the Brazilian Chico Buarque to the Portuguese Hélia Correia or Lídia Jorge passing through the Mozambican Mia Couto, the signatories are aware that there may be a “cost” in “giving the stage which, under normal circumstances, would not deserve a footnote ”.
