Portuguese-speaking writers appeal against “escalation” of populism and xenophobia

The writers say that they cannot look away or remain silent. And they are committed to never participating in events, conferences and festivals connected with ideas that conflict with the principles of tolerance and human dignity

A group of nearly 200 Portuguese-speaking writers this Tuesday called for political commitments to be made to prevent an “escalation” of populism, violence and xenophobia, and called on democratic agents to counter these resurgent threats.

In an open letter sent to Lusa, signed by 187 Portuguese-speaking writers, ranging from the Brazilian Chico Buarque to the Portuguese Hélia Correia or Lídia Jorge passing through the Mozambican Mia Couto, the signatories are aware that there may be a “cost” in “giving the stage which, under normal circumstances, would not deserve a footnote ”.
