Xanana Gusmão refuses to join current East Timorese leaders

East Timorese historical leader Xanana Gusmão today considered that he had no “capacity” to approach the civilian and military leaders who now govern Timor-Leste, thus refusing a request for dialogue made by the head of the Armed Forces.

Xanana Gusmão responded ironically to a letter sent by the commander of the Timor-Leste Defense Forces (F-FDTL), Lere Anan Timur, to several leaders in the country, including the current president of the National Congress of East Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT), Xanana Gusmão, who identifies Falintil as the “commander in chief”, the armed wing of the Timorese resistance.

In this letter, obtained today by Lusa, Lere Anan Timur asked the country’s historical leaders for “courage” to help overcome the disagreements, personal and partisan or institutional that are generating disillusionment, demotivation and “great concern”, including among the military .

Lere mentions a list of “negative effects” on the population, where “a feeling of disillusionment, demotivation and a lot of concern about the future” has grown.

In response, in a letter to which Lusa also had access, Xanana Gusmão, ironic and says that she made an “effort to try to understand the letter of her excellence, which showed a very high thought”.
