Accelerating the Light Rapid Transit network

The Public Works Bureau has released the results of the public consultation on the Strategic Development Plan for the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system. This infrastructure is a central pillar of Macau’s Third Five-Year Plan, playing a key role in integrating the city into the country’s broader development strategy, overcoming transport constraints, improving mobility, and drawing visitors to local neighborhoods. The new plan is considered more scientific and better aligned with the territory’s socioeconomic needs, and has received an overall positive response from the public.

For the next stage, the government’s decision to prioritize the East Line extension and the South Line deserves support. The East Line will improve the efficiency of cross-border transport links. The South Line will connect the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge checkpoint, Zone A, NAPE, Nam Van Lakes, Sai Van, and Barra Station. The route will serve well-established residential and commercial districts, the coastal green corridor, numerous schools, and the city’s central business area, significantly easing traffic congestion on both weekdays and public holidays.

As for the remaining routes, the West Line will serve the Inner Harbour, a major urban corridor with around 250,000 residents living within a 500-meter radius. As one of Macau’s traditional districts and a gateway to several tourist attractions, the area regularly experiences heavy traffic. The line is expected to complement the Inner Harbour redevelopment plan while also helping address the district’s long-standing flooding problems. Meanwhile, continued population growth has made central Taipa the most densely populated area in Macau, placing increasing pressure on its road network. The authorities are therefore expected to accelerate the construction of the West Line, the Taipa Central Line, and the Taipa North Line, bringing forward the completion of the planned circular rail network.

Finally, the continued expansion of the LRT network will require a larger pool of specialized professionals. Given the ongoing changes in Macau’s employment structure, there is already a clear shortage of technical personnel. The authorities should prepare in advance by ensuring adequate training programs and developing a reserve of qualified talent. This would provide strong professional support for the long-term operation of the railway system while creating more high-quality employment opportunities for local residents.
