Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a stark warning to President Donald Trump today, stating that the stability of the relationship between the world’s two largest powers hinges on how Washington handles the Taiwan issue.
According to Chinese state media, Xi described Taiwan as the “most important” factor in bilateral relations, cautioning that while good management leads to stability, poor handling could force the two nations into direct confrontation or “conflict.”
The warning comes during Trump’s high-stakes 48-hour visit to Beijing, where the two leaders met at the Great Hall of the People. The agenda is heavy with global crises, including the energy blockade in Iran and nuclear arms negotiations, but the status of Taiwan remains a primary friction point.
Beijing is particularly aggrieved by a recent $11 billion U.S. arms package approved for the island, a move China views as a violation of its sovereignty.
