The Portuguese athlete Fernando Pimenta won his second gold medal today at the sprint canoeing World Cup in Szeged, triumphing in the K1 5,000 meters in Hungary.
One day after winning the Olympic K1 1,000 meters, the athlete from Ponte de Lima was again the strongest in the longest distance, winning in 21:55.97 minutes—1.48 seconds ahead of Denmark’s Mads Brandt Pedersen.
South African Hamish Lovemore closed the podium, finishing 16.04 seconds behind Pimenta, while the Portuguese athlete Bruno Brasileiro did not finish the race.
In the morning session, world silver medalists João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista took third place in the Olympic K2 500 meters distance, finishing in 1:27.54 minutes behind the Paris 2024 Olympic champions, Germans Jacob Schopf and Max Lemke (1:27.12), and the Hungarians Levente Kurucz and Bence Fodor (1:27.16).

In the same distance but in the B final, Iago Bebiano and Bruno Brasileiro finished sixth, while Clara Duarte and Teresa Portela were fifth in the women’s K2 500 B final, and André Moreira finished sixth in the K1 500 meters C final.
Portugal ends the Szeged World Cup with four medals: three golds—two from Fernando Pimenta and one from Pedro Casinha in the K1 200—and one bronze earned by João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista.
