The justice system in Texas has reached a final, harrowing conclusion in a case that shocked the nation two years ago. On Tuesday, a Fort Worth jury sentenced 34-year-old Tanner Horner to death for the 2022 kidnapping and murder of 7-year-old Athena Strand. The sentence followed a month of emotionally grueling testimony and Horner’s own guilty plea to capital murder, which he entered just as his trial commenced.

The tragedy began in the rural town of Paradise while Horner was working as a contract driver for FedEx. While delivering a Christmas gift—ironically a box of “You Can Be Anything” Barbies—Horner abducted the young girl from her home. Her body was discovered two days later, triggering a wave of grief across the community.

Throughout the proceedings, prosecutors dismantled Horner’s initial claims that he had accidentally struck the child with his vehicle and killed her in a state of panic, describing his actions instead as a series of calculated, predatory choices.

The most devastating evidence presented to the jury came from the delivery van’s own internal recording system. Jurors were moved to tears as they listened to more than an hour of audio documenting Athena’s final moments.

The recordings captured the child’s confusion and terror as she asked Horner why he was taking her, to which he chillingly replied, “because you are pretty.”

Despite her pleas to go home to her mother and her heartbreaking attempt to reason with him—telling him her mother taught her not to hurt people—the audio recorded the sounds of a violent struggle, including strangulation and blunt force trauma.

Defending Horner, attorney Steven Goble admitted the evidence was “terrible” but attempted to pivot toward a life sentence by highlighting Horner’s background. The defense argued that Horner suffered from various mental illnesses, was on the autism spectrum, and had been affected by fetal alcohol exposure and lead poisoning.

However, the jury ultimately found that these factors did not outweigh the brutality of the crime or the high probability that Horner remained a continuing threat to society.

Horner remained stone-faced as the death sentence was read aloud in the courtroom. For the family of Athena Strand, the verdict brings a legal end to a nightmare that began with a simple holiday delivery and ended in an unthinkable act of violence.
