José “Piculín” Ortiz, the legendary Puerto Rican basketball player and FIBA Hall of Famer, passed away today at the age of 62, as announced by the Puerto Rican Basketball Federation. The federation paid tribute to his memory on social media, stating that the island has lost more than an athlete, but a true legend who carried the national flag to the highest levels of the sport.

Ortiz had been battling health issues in recent years and was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023. His induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2019 stood as a crowning achievement in a career that spanned over two decades. At the time of his induction, Ortiz expressed deep pride in serving as an ambassador for his beloved homeland.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis also honored the 6-foot-11 center, praising his immense talent, versatility, and “magnetic personality” that made his nickname a household name in international basketball.

After a standout collegiate career at Oregon State University—where he was named the 1987 Pac-10 Player of the Year—Ortiz played in the NBA for the Utah Jazz before moving to Europe.

His European tenure was distinguished by stints at prestigious clubs including Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Aris in Greece, where he won the Korac Cup in 1997. Upon returning to Puerto Rico, he became the face of the local BSN league, securing eight championships and earning the league MVP title in 2002.

On the international stage, Ortiz represented Puerto Rico in four World Cups and four Olympic Games. He was a pivotal figure in one of the most historic upsets in basketball history: Puerto Rico’s 92-73 victory over the United States at the Athens 2004 Olympics, where he contributed eight points and six rebounds.

A former FIBA AmeriCup champion, his legacy remains an inspiration for generations of athletes throughout the Caribbean and beyond.
