European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced today that six billion of the 90 billion euros in loans provided to Ukraine will be specifically dedicated to purchasing drones. This initiative marks a significant step in bolstering Ukraine’s defensive capabilities against ongoing Russian aggression.
“The first defense package will focus on drones sourced from and destined for Ukraine, valued at approximately six billion euros,” Von der Leyen stated during a debate at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. She emphasized that as Russia increases its aggression, Europe is responding by doubling its support.

Following the release of the 90 billion euro financing package, Von der Leyen explained that the first tranche of 45 billion euros will be disbursed within this quarter. She highlighted that two-thirds of this initial funding is strictly earmarked for the support of Ukrainian defense efforts.
The European Union granted final approval for the loan after Hungary lifted a two-month veto. This hurdle was removed following the electoral defeat of former Eurosceptic and nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the 12th, clearing the way for the aid to proceed.
