North Korean leader Kim Jong-un officially inaugurated a memorial museum in Pyongyang on Sunday dedicated to the soldiers killed while fighting alongside Russian forces in the ongoing war against Ukraine. The opening ceremony for the Memorial Museum of Combat Feats at the Overseas Military Operations took place on the first anniversary of what Pyongyang and Moscow describe as the successful liberation of the Russian Kursk region from Ukrainian control.

The high-profile event was attended by senior Russian officials, including the speaker of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, and Defense Minister Andrei Belousov. The presence of such a high-level Russian delegation underscores the deepening strategic and military alliance between the two nations, which has strengthened significantly since North Korea began providing troops and conventional weaponry to support Russia’s war effort.

During the ceremony, Kim Jong-un delivered a speech emphasizing the necessity of solidifying relations between Pyongyang and Moscow into a powerful, unified bulwark. He praised the North Korean and Russian forces for their combined efforts, which he framed as a critical defense against what he characterized as a U.S.-led Western “hegemonic plot.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin also expressed his gratitude in a letter read during the proceedings, hailing the museum as a symbol of the enduring solidarity between the two countries.

Intelligence agencies from South Korea and Western nations estimate that North Korea deployed approximately 15,000 troops to the conflict, primarily to the Kursk border region.

South Korean officials have reported that the deployment resulted in significant casualties, with an estimated 2,000 North Korean soldiers killed and thousands more wounded. Despite the heavy losses, the regime continues to frame these sacrifices as proof of heroism and national patriotism.

Beyond the memorial, the visit by Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov served as a platform for further military integration. State media reported that discussions were held regarding a bilateral military cooperation plan for the 2027-2031 period.

This signals that both Moscow and Pyongyang are looking toward long-term engagement, further alarming international observers who fear that Russia may be providing high-tech technology in exchange for North Korea’s continued military support.
