The death toll from a devastating bomb attack in southwestern Colombia has climbed to 19, with authorities reporting at least 38 others injured. The explosion, which targeted a section of the Pan-American Highway in the Cauca region, destroyed over a dozen vehicles and left deep craters in the road, illustrating the violent intensity of the incident.

Officials have swiftly attributed the attack to the primary dissident faction of the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a group that notably refused to sign the 2016 peace accord.

Witnesses described the harrowing scene as they traveled through the area. Francisco Javier Betancourt, a local coffee producer, recounted the terror of the moment, noting the destruction and questioning the current state of the nation. The attack follows a period of escalating instability in the region, including a deadly strike on a military base in Cali last Friday.

These events are part of a broader, alarming trend of violence across the Valle del Cauca and Cauca regions, which have served as strongholds for dissident groups under the control of commanders like “Mordisco.”

The security situation has become increasingly dire, with 2025 marked by a wave of attacks against security forces that also caused significant civilian casualties—the worst such period in a decade. In response to the crisis, Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed on Saturday that the government is rushing to reinforce military and police presence in the affected zones.

This tactical surge aims to stabilize the area before the upcoming electoral deadlines, as violence has become the dominant issue of the current political cycle.

The timing of these attacks has severely heightened tensions just one month ahead of the May 31 presidential elections. Security has been a primary concern for the Colombian electorate since the assassination of right-wing candidate Miguel Uribe at a campaign rally in June 2025.

As Gustavo Petro, the country’s first leftist president, prepares to vacate the office he has held since 2022, the nation faces a precarious transition period, shadowed by the resurgence of armed conflict and the persistent struggle for regional peace.
