Portugal’s unemployment rate hits 5.6% in January, a 23-year low

The number is the lowest since February 2002, when it matched that same figure.

Unemployment remained at 5.6% in January, the same figure as December 2025 and 0.7 percentage points below January of that year, according to a provisional estimate released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

In the Monthly Employment and Unemployment Estimates published today, INE maintained its forecast of 5.6% for December’s unemployment rate — previously released on January 29th — the lowest since February 2002, when it matched that same figure.
