Coach Filipe Luís was dismissed on Monday night by Flamengo, shortly after the club thrashed Madureira 8-0 and secured their place in the Rio de Janeiro state championship final.
“Club de Regatas Flamengo announces that, as of this Tuesday (March 3rd), Filipe Luís will no longer be the coach of the professional team,” the Rio de Janeiro club stated in an official statement.
The former Brazilian international was caught off guard by Flamengo’s decision, which was communicated to him by executive director, Portuguese José Boto. According to the Brazilian press, Leonardo Jardim is being considered as his successor.
Filipe Luís, who ended his playing career at the club in 2023, took charge of the first team just a few months later. During his time as Flamengo’s head coach, he won a Copa Libertadores, a Brazilian championship, a Supercup, a Copa do Brasil, and a Carioca championship.
His departure, nearly two years after taking the role, comes at a turbulent moment for the club, following criticism after a two-legged defeat in the South American Supercup final, and with the team collecting just four points from three league matches.
