A total of 220 Sands China volunteers gather outside The Venetian Macao Tuesday before visiting 200 elderly users of the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance Service. The company has partnered with Peng On Tung and the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau for 19 consecutive years to co-organise these Chinese New Year visits to deliver festive blessings to seniors.
Sands China continued a nearly two-decade tradition of community care on Feb. 10, when senior management, team members and 220 Sands Cares Ambassadors visited 200 elderly users of the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance Service (singles and couples) to deliver Chinese New Year gift packs and festive greetings.
The outreach, part of the Sands Cares Spring Celebration series, extended this year’s support beyond Seac Pai Van Public Housing in Coloane to include residents of Edifício do Bairro da Ilha Verde.
Since 2008 Sands China and the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance Service Centre (under the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, UGAMM) have co-organised Chinese New Year visits that combine welfare checks, companion visits and practical assistance such as household cleaning and simple repairs.
For this year’s campaign, each senior received a gift pack containing cooking oil, rice, noodles, cleaning supplies and handwritten fai chun; packs were assembled earlier during the “Chinese New Year Festive Kit Build and Calligraphy Writing” event led by Las Vegas Sands President and COO Patrick Dumont and Sands China management, who also wrote auspicious fai chun onsite.
The initiative broadened community engagement: Everyone Stray Dogs Macau accompanied volunteers with animal companions for the first time, and Sands Cares teams also distributed Chinese New Year lunch boxes at the Corner of Portuguese Cuisine (Fuhong Society of Macau’s Pou Choi Centre), adding a handwritten fai chun and an apple to each meal.
Since last year’s “NBA Cares x Sands Cares Community Impact Week,” Sands China has distributed 1,000 lunch boxes to disadvantaged individuals and families.
Dr. Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd., said: “As the Chinese New Year draws near, we are delighted to carry forward our tradition of care. Together with 220 Sands Care Ambassadors, we visited the community to share festive blessings with elderly users of the Peng On Tung service, bringing warmth and companionship during this special season. This year, our parent company’s management and our volunteer team prepared 20,000 New Year gift packs filled with food and daily necessities, along with handwritten calligraphy fai chun of the Chinese character Fu (福). Through these heartfelt gestures, we extend Sands’ blessings to the community and reaffirm our emphasis on community service. We are deeply grateful to our long-term partner Peng On Tung and the many community volunteers who, for 19 consecutive years, have supported this annual initiative. Their dedication has allowed the spirit of Sands Cares to truly take root and shine brightly in the community.”
Ng Siu Lai, President of UGAMM, added: “As Sands China’s long-term community partner, Peng On Tung is delighted to participate in its annual Spring Celebration. With compassion in our hearts, we join together to give back to society, delivering festive blessings to the elderly and allowing them to feel the warmth of the community. Since 2008, Sands China has continuously supported UGAMM… To date, nearly 29,000 elderly residents have benefited from the service.”
The Sands Cares Ambassador volunteer programme, launched in August 2009, has mobilised more than 4,000 team members and logged over 360,000 cumulative service hours, underpinning Sands China’s long-term commitment to an inclusive Macao.
