Parents, teachers and guests join students of inclusive education and special education programmes at Sands China’s ‘Diverse Development Lab: Interview Preparation & Career Exploration Day’ Aug. 6 at The Venetian Macao. The event marked the culmination of the secondary school students’ three- to four-week internship programme with Sands China.
Sands China Ltd. recently concluded a three- to four-week internship programme for 22 senior secondary students in special-education and inclusive-education programmes.
The initiative culminated Aug. 6 with the Diverse Development Lab: Interview Preparation & Career Exploration Day at The Venetian Macao.
The event brought together parents, teachers, and guests to celebrate the achievements of the student interns through interactive activities, interview workshops, career exploration sessions and a certificate presentation.
The students represented 11 local schools, with ten joining through the 2025 Workplace Experience Pilot Scheme co-organised by the Labour Affairs Bureau and the Education and Youth Development Bureau, and 12 others through the Bureau’s 2025 Work Experience Programme.
Internships took place across nine Sands China departments, including food and beverage, culinary services, floral operations, recreation, and human resources.
Paulo Cheong, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Sands China Ltd., said: “Young people are our future. Through new initiatives like our Diverse Development Lab, Sands China fully supports the Macao SAR government’s policy to promote career planning among students. This initiative aims to help young people gain early exposure to workplaces, discover their interests and strengths, and get inspired for their academic and career planning. It also helps carry out our corporate social responsibility by nurturing talent with special learning needs and fostering a culture of inclusion and diversity within our company.
Sands China currently employs 72 people with disabilities, one-third of whom are full-time workers and nearly half of whom have worked with the company for more than five years, demonstrating our commitment to building an inclusive workplace.
Our sincere thanks go to our partners – the Labour Affairs Bureau, the Education and Youth Development Bureau, and the participating schools – for their continued trust in Sands China to offer platforms like these for youth development, contributing to the talent development of Macao.”
The Career Exploration Day featured six themed booths, including activities on personality and career exploration, job simulations, interview etiquette, and practical interview guidelines. Students also interacted with Sands China team members who had graduated from inclusive or special education programmes, working together on floral bouquets and towel animals to gain first-hand experience of workplace roles.
In addition, one booth highlighted a joint training initiative by the Labour Affairs Bureau and Macau Special Olympics, while an information zone introduced education programmes aligned with Macao’s “1+4” economic diversification strategy.
Distinguished guests included Chan Tze Wai, deputy director of the Labour Affairs Bureau; Lei Lai Keng, head of the employment department of the Labour Affairs Bureau; Chow Pui Leng, head of the Centre of Psycho-pedagogical Support and Special Education of the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Ryan Tam, head of vocational rehabilitation services at Macau Special Olympics; and representatives from several local schools.
Launched in 2025, Sands China’s Diverse Development Lab supports Macao’s secondary students with activities such as interview coaching, self-assessment, site visits, and internships.
The initiative provides students with practical workplace knowledge, equipping them with the mindset and skills to transition confidently into their future careers.
