The local entrepreneurs’ visit to Lisbon was made “in line with the Macao government’s initiative to spearhead technology-driven smart tourism and foster the growth of high and new technology” explains Grant Chum, chief executive officer and executive director of Sands China Ltd.
“Sands China believes the insights gained during the trip can help Macao build a technological exchange platform that empowers industrial development”, he said.
Charlie Cai, vice-president of procurement and sustainability at Sands China, highlights the fact that the visit to Lisbon was based on the idea of bringing together “key stakeholders from Portugal’s tourism and technology industries to connect with counterparts from Macao”, all to “facilitate connections that could lead to valuable collaborations”.

According to him, Sands China’s mission is to “develop Macao as Asia’s leading business, leisure, convention and entertainment destination”. For this reason, “we have invited our friends from Macao’s certified technology enterprises to join us in this exploratory journey. Macao’s technology entrepreneurs and leaders were here to seek potential marketers, distributors and clients”.
Macao already has 33 certified technology companies, but many more could emerge with potential economic diversification. Thomas Pong, a participating member and deputy director of DSEDT, said that the Technology Enterprise Certification Program aims to “support their growth”.
“We have been launching various support measures in terms of financing, talent training or taxation. We hope that these support measures can further increase research and development resources, as well as the talents of companies, so that they can improve their innovation capabilities”.
