Torrential rains kill at least 62 in China

The torrential rains that hit northern China in recent days have left at least 62 dead, according to a balance sheet released this Wednesday (9), which tripled the number of victims in Beijing in the period of a week.

Typhoon Doksuri, downgraded to a storm after making landfall in the neighboring Philippines, swept across parts of China last week with heavy rains that caused considerable damage.

Beijing, which has seen the heaviest rainfall in 140 years, and neighboring Hebei province have been particularly hard hit.

On Wednesday, the death toll from the storms rose to at least 33, with 18 missing in Beijing alone, while devastating storms also hit northeast China, close to Russia and North Korea.

On August 1, the death toll in the capital alone rose to 11.

“I want to express my deepest condolences,” Beijing’s deputy mayor Xia Linmao said at a news conference, in which he also called for a minute’s silence for the victims.
