Ukraine wants to exclude Russia from UN, hold peace summit in February

Ten months after the Ukrainian ambassador to the United Nations declared that Russia is illegally occupying the seat that belonged to the Soviet Union in the United Nations Security Council, the Ukrainian government is once again taking up the issue, and now even intends to expel it. of Moscow of the organization. At the same time, the head of diplomacy showed interest in holding a summit to achieve peace, preferably mediated by the UN secretary general and taking place in New York.

The conditions outlined by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, do not seem attractive for Vladimir Putin’s Russia to accept participating directly in the peace summit: in an interview with the Associated Press, Kuleba said that Moscow would have to accept facing a war crimes court as a condition for sitting at the same table.

However, the minister, who would like to have António Guterres as a mediator, admits that other countries could speak directly, as happened with the Black Sea cereal agreement, in which not only the UN but also Turkey participated. “Every war ends in a diplomatic way. Every war ends as a result of actions taken on the battlefield and at the negotiating table,” said Kuleba, who aims for the summit at the end of February, one year after the launch of the Russian “special military operation”.

In November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented his formula for peace during the G20 summit. The Kremlin repeats that it is ready for negotiations, but taking into account “the current realities”, a way of saying that it wants not only recognition of the annexation of Crimea but also of the other four regions in which it manufactured referendums in September.
