Johnson & Johnson will stop selling talcum powder in 2023

Johnson & Johnson announced in a statement that it has made the commercial decision to replace talc with cornstarch beginning in 2023. “As part of a worldwide portfolio evaluation, we have made the commercial decision to transition to a talc powder. for babies based on corn starch”, said the company, quoted by the news agency “Reuters”.

The company revealed that the cornstarch-based baby product is already sold in several countries. In 2020, Johnson & Johnson had stopped selling talcum powder in the United States and Canada, after allegations that the product would cause cancer, which caused a drop in demand.

According to Reuters, Johnson & Johnson faces about 38,000 lawsuits filed by consumers who say that talc-based products, a clayey mineral composed of magnesium silicate, caused cancer due to asbestos contamination.

The allegations emerged in 2018, with information indicating that Johnson & Johnson had known for decades that talcum powder contained asbestos, a mineral similar in composition and characteristics to asbestos, a material that has harmful health effects.
