Schools transformed into shelters. Mozambique on red alert awaiting storm Chalane

The Mozambican population is scared and storing supplies for the next few days. The effects of the storm are expected to be felt this afternoon.

Northern Mozambique is on red alert due to the arrival of the Chalane storm. According to the latest meteorological information, the storm is already in the Mozambique channel and continues at 110 km / hour.

Suicídio Jorge is coordinator of Food for the Hungry in Dondo and Nhamatanda, but is in Beira, where the storm is expected to arrive this afternoon. Speaking to TSF, he reports the fears felt by the population, which still suffers the trauma of Cyclone Idai, which devastated the country in March 2019 – claimed more than 600 deaths and reached 1.8 million people. In addition to Idai, shortly afterwards, in April, Mozambique was also affected by Cyclone Kenneth, which killed 45 people and affected another 250,000.

“It hasn’t been two years since Idai and another cyclone is coming. We don’t know if we are going to withstand yet another storm or not, that’s the concern ”, explains Suicídio Jorge.
