Marcelo is a candidate for the presidential elections because he doesn’t leave “in the middle of a difficult walk”

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced, this Monday, that he is a candidate for the presidential elections of 2021, scheduled for next January, justifying his decision in the context of a pandemic. He explained that “he will not go out in the middle of a difficult walk”, nor “run away” from his responsibilities.

The announcement was made at the Versailles pastry shop, in Belém, Lisbon, which was the seat of his candidacy five years ago, with the president explaining that “there is a pandemic to face and a crisis to overcome”.

Ensuring that he is and will continue to be an “independent” head of state, Marcelo says he remains “exactly the same”.

About to turn 72, on December 12, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was elected President of the Republic in the first round in the elections of January 24, 2016, with 52% of the votes cast.
