European network warns of increased racist attacks in Portugal

The European Network Against Racism warned this Thursday of what it classifies as a “very worrying increase in racist attacks from the extreme right in Portugal” in recent months and demands an “urgent response from the Portuguese authorities”.

In a joint statement released in Brussels, signed by dozens of civil society organizations and MEPs, the network – ENAR, in its English acronym – expresses its “firm solidarity” with the Portuguese “fellow activists” who work tirelessly to promote justice and challenge racism ”and which, he maintains,“ are not safe ”today, in light of the recent death threats received.

Taking account of several episodes of racism in the country this year, the European Network Against Racism points out that “since 2019, when the Portuguese extreme right party first won seats in parliament, extreme right activists have been encouraged to commit racially motivated crimes against people of color in Portugal ”, with several human rights defenders and families being“ personally targeted and threatened, and faced hate speech, death threats, and judicial harassment ”.
