India invests in Maldives to contain Chinese influence

India on Thursday announced an investment of $ 550 million (€ 422 million) to build bridges in the Maldives in an attempt to contain China’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean.

During the term of former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen, the South Asian archipelago borrowed $ 1 billion from Beijing and made several contracts with Chinese companies for infrastructure projects.

This relationship of financial dependence fueled concerns in New Delhi and the West about the expansion of Chinese influence in the region.
