Egypt claimed its first-ever victory in football World Cup history on Sunday, winning in its ninth match and fourth tournament appearance by defeating New Zealand 3-1 to seize the lead in Group G at the 2026 finals.
In the second-round match played in Vancouver, Canada, Finn Surman put the Oceanian side ahead in the 15th minute. However, the Pharaohs mounted a second-half comeback with goals from Mostafa Ziko in the 58th minute, Mohamed Salah in the 67th minute, and Trezeguet in the 82nd minute.

The African team now sits alone at the top of the group standings with four points, followed by Iran and Belgium with two points each after their goalless draw, while New Zealand remains on one point. All four national teams still hold the mathematical possibility of advancing to the Round of 32 heading into the final matchday.
